Seller agreement

This agreement is between you (the maker) and The Makeistry Studio, on top of the terms of service. You agree to it when you open a shop.
What you can sell
Items you made or designed yourself, or genuine vintage. Nothing on the prohibited items list. Describe items honestly, with your own photos.
Fees
There's no monthly subscription. You pay these, and the amounts that apply to your shop are always shown in your dashboard:
- A listing fee for each listing, per year. It's charged when you publish a listing and each year it renews. Sizes, colors and other variants of one listing are included, and there's no extra fee however many times it sells. Listings renew automatically unless you turn renewal off; we email you before each renewal. A listing that isn't renewed expires and is hidden from buyers. Listing fees aren't refunded once a listing is published, including if you unpublish or delete it early (publishing it again within its paid year is free).
- A sales commission on each sale: a percentage of the item price after discounts. Shipping and sales tax are not included unless your dashboard says otherwise.
- Payment processing: Stripe's fee for each payment, shown separately on the order. Stripe doesn't return its fee when a payment is refunded, so neither do we.
- Stripe's account fee, passed on at cost: Stripe charges us a monthly fee (currently $2) for each seller account in any month money is sent to it. In a month you're paid, it comes out of your first payout and shows on your earnings page. In a month you aren't paid, there's no fee.
Shipping you charge buyers goes to you. Shipping labels bought through The Makeistry are deducted from your earnings. Advertising is optional and never charged without your approval and a budget you set.
Fees are taken from your payouts, not charged to a card. Fees and costs that are more than an order earns (for example a shipping label that costs more than the sale, or listing fees before your first sale) are a balance you owe us, repaid from your next payouts. While the balance is high we may pause new listings, renewals and labels that cost more than the order earns. If you stop selling with a balance, you still owe it. We'll tell you at least 30 days before we raise fees.
Payouts
Payments go through Stripe. You need a verified Stripe account to sell. We pay your share of an order 3 days after it's delivered, or 14 days after you ship it, whichever is first, to your Stripe account. Stripe sends your balance to your bank once a week, on Mondays; your bank may take a few days more. Payouts are held while a buyer's problem with that order is open.
Shipping
Ship within the time you state, with tracking where possible. If an order hasn't shipped 14 days after purchase, the buyer can report it as not received.
Refunds and problems
You can cancel unshipped orders and give refunds from your dashboard. The sales commission on refunded items is refunded in proportion; the payment processing fee is not (see Fees). If a buyer reports a problem, reply within 3 days. If you can't agree, we decide, and we may refund the buyer from your earnings for that order. See purchase protection.
Chargebacks
If a buyer's bank disputes a payment, we hold the disputed amount from your earnings for that order and respond to the bank. If we win, it's released to you; if we lose, it's kept. We cover Stripe's dispute fee. Help us by keeping proof of shipping and delivery and answering quickly. This applies to every dispute, including claims that a card was used without the owner's permission, whether or not our fraud checks flagged the order.
Fraud: what we do, and who carries the risk
We work to help you spot and avoid fraudulent orders. We check every paid order using automated rules, information from our payment provider, and, for some orders, an automated review by an AI service. When an order looks high risk, we tell you before you ship, show you why, and keep shipping on hold until you decide what to do. The buyer isn't told about the check.
These checks are a help, not a guarantee. They can miss fraud, and they can flag genuine buyers. As the seller, you carry the risk of fraud on your orders, whether or not we flagged them. In particular:
- You decide whether to ship a flagged order. You can message the buyer to confirm details, cancel and refund it (the sales commission is refunded too; Stripe's processing fee isn't), or ship it. If you ship, you accept the risk.
- If a payment turns out to be fraudulent and the card owner's bank takes it back, you don't keep your earnings for that order, even if you shipped it, as described under Chargebacks. We don't make up the loss, and flagging (or not flagging) an order doesn't make us responsible for it.
- Keep the whole sale on The Makeistry. Don't accept payment another way, ship to a different address than the order shows, or hand an order to a courier the buyer arranges. These are common scams, and we can't help with orders handled that way.
- We may cancel and refund an order we believe is fraudulent, hold its payout while we look into it, and hold payouts on orders where the buyer appears to be connected to your shop.
- Tell us about suspected fraud by reporting the buyer or contacting joosterman@gmail.com. It helps us protect other makers.
Taxes
You're responsible for income tax on your sales. Stripe may send you a tax form (such as a 1099-K in the US). Your earnings page has a CSV for your records.
Ending
You can close your shop at any time once your orders are complete and paid out. We may suspend shops that break these rules; money owed for completed orders is still paid, less refunds and chargebacks.
